How to make it rain in Dubai

with 4 comments

It hasn’t rained properly here for nearly three years. We’ve had the odd tinkle that’s over before you’ve even realised it’s raining, and perhaps even the odd quick shower, but nothing you could call a rainy day.

And certainly nothing, much to DS’s disgust, that’s lead to a proper puddle.

It’s a serious issue. Last year, Sheikh Khalifa, the Ruler of the UAE, called for prayers for rain. Sometimes the UAE even indulges in a little cloud-seeding to try and coax the wet stuff from out of fake clouds. Personally, I’ve done the odd little rain dance – mainly at DS’s behest.

But I’d like to share an incredible new discovery with you: I have learned how to make it rain. Furthermore, a friend who lives nearby has also tried my method with 100 per cent success.

Here’s how to do it:

Forget rain dances and cloud-seeding, just leave the sofa covers off if you need rain

Buy the most expensive range of cream-upholstered garden furniture you can find. Every night of the year, cover it up religiously with made-to-measure waterproof covers “in case it rains”. Then, one night in March, when the evening sky is clear and winter is almost over, leave the sofa set uncovered for a night, its virginal cream cushions winking, naked, at the stars.

If you follow these instructions, you can almost guarantee that, at around 2.30am, you’ll be woken by the unaccustomed sound of rain lashing your windows.

To be honest, I think reupholstering a sofa set’s a small price to pay to see a genuine puddle.
